Installing a casino app: the APK step by step

Values per casino compared.

How we collect the data ▸

A real-money casino app for Android reaches German users as an APK file or as a web app in the browser, not from the Google Play Store. Compared with a store app, installing an APK adds steps of its own: download the file, allow the source, open the package, confirm the installation. Where the file comes from and which system requirements apply is covered in the overview of the casino app for Android; here the process follows step by step, together with error messages and updates.

The basis is the data on four casinos: 22Bet, Irwin, Frumzi and 5Gringos. An installation concerns only two of them, because Frumzi and 5Gringos run in the mobile browser.

The detour via the website has a fixed reason. For Germany, Google Play only allows sports betting, horse racing and lotteries as gambling apps; online casino games and slots are missing from the German list.

Before the download: storage and Android version

Two values decide whether the installation can succeed at all: free storage and the Android version of the device. Fixed figures exist only for 22Bet, and even there from two sources with different numbers. According to goal.com the APK is 55.36 MB and requires Android 6.0 or newer plus a processor from 1.2 GHz. The German Uptodown page states 53.19 MB and “Requires Android 7.0 or higher”. Anyone using a device with Android 6 therefore gets a different answer depending on the source. Neither source gives a version number of the app.

For Irwin there is no information on file size, Android version or processor.

When an installation fails, advisers in forums usually ask first whether enough storage is free.

An APK cannot be installed on an iPhone or iPad at all, because APK is a pure Android format. How casinos can be reached on Apple devices via the App Store or a web app is described on the page about the casino app for iPhone with the details on 22Bet and Irwin.

III

Step 1: download the APK from the operator's site

The file comes from the casino's website. For 22Bet, goal.com names the official 22bet website as the only source of the APK. At Irwin, the casino answered a player's question by saying the download icons sit at the bottom of the home page. Whether an APK file lies behind them, the answer does not say. The easiest way is to download the file directly in the smartphone's browser; it then lands in the device's download folder.

APK portals are not always a second route for German users. The German Uptodown page for the 22Bet app lists size, Android version, 39 permissions and the package name org.bet22.client, but reports “Download not available in your location”. One player describes the situation in a forum by saying that nowadays you have to go through APK sites or the operators' official download pages.

If the APK is on a computer, it can be moved to the smartphone by cable or Bluetooth and opened there with a file manager. A file that is much smaller than stated is seen as a warning sign in forums; the example given is 10 MB instead of 200 MB.

Some portals offer an XAPK instead of an APK. That is a bundle of the APK and additional files such as OBB data or split APK parts.

IV

Step 2: allow installation from this source

Android blocks every installation outside Google Play until the user allows the installation of unknown apps. What this permission looks like depends on the Android version of the device, and the menus changed fundamentally with Android 8.0.

From Android 8.0 (API level 26) the permission applies per source. It is granted in the system screen “Install unknown apps” for exactly the app that opens the file, for example the browser or the file manager.

Up to Android 7.1.1 there is instead the global setting “Unknown sources” under Settings › Security, called “Unbekannte Herkunft” in older German guides. Android recommends allowing only the single app instead of all sources when the device offers this. Manufacturer-specific menu paths, for example for Samsung or Xiaomi: no information. Some network operators do not allow installation from unknown sources at all.

The menu paths from Android 8.0 onwards and for older devices are shown in the guide on how to allow unknown sources, with the screen names for each version and the most common hurdles.

If the switch is greyed out, advisers in forums name a parental control such as Family Link as the cause: it locks the permission for the account concerned.

V

Step 3: open and install the APK

After download and permission, the file is opened, either from the browser's download bar or via the file manager. Android then shows the installation dialog with the app's name; tapping “Install” starts the process. After that the app appears in the app menu and opens like any other.

During installation, Google Play Protect steps in. It is active by default, checks apps when they are installed and scans the device regularly, including apps from other sources. Known harmful apps can be reported, disabled or removed. For an app that has never been scanned and does not come from Google Play, Play Protect may recommend a code scan. During such an installation the device can send information such as app URLs, device ID, Android version and IP address to Google.

A general notice often appears, for example that the app “cannot be verified” or has not been checked by Play Protect. According to advisers in forums, this is often a standard notice for files from outside the store. Google recommends keeping Play Protect switched on at all times.

Once the app is installed, the APK file is no longer needed and can be deleted; the app remains.

VI

“App not installed”: common causes

“The app was not installed” is the most frequent message in forums, often without any further explanation. Advisers name a short list of causes for it: not enough storage, an app already present with the same package, a file that Android classifies as harmful, an incompatible device or a damaged file. On the missing permission for unknown apps the advisers disagree: one adviser counts it among the causes of “not installed”, another expects a different message in that case.

“The app was not installed because the package conflicts with an existing package” points to an existing version of the same app with a different signature. One player writes that he tried in vain for two months. The answer from the forum: the different signature blocks the installation, and the existing version has to be uninstalled first. Modified apps are often signed with a different key than the original.

“There was a problem parsing the package” means that Android cannot process the file. Advisers then first ask about an incompatible Android version and then whether the permission for unknown sources is missing. For 22Bet, comparing with the two minimum versions from the section on storage and Android version helps.

“The package appears to be corrupt” shows up when the file is incomplete or altered. One user reports three hours of attempts with different versions, each time with the same message. Advisers name a broken APK as the cause; a fresh download from the official source replaces the faulty file.

Further patterns from forums: the installation loads briefly, the window closes, and nothing happens. The first follow-up question is then which smartphone and which Android version are in use. A user with a Fire tablet reports “app not installed” despite enough storage and after a restart.

VII

Updating the app

An APK from a website does not update itself via Google Play. The update is a new APK that is installed over the existing app. This only works if the package name and signature stay the same; according to forums, Android otherwise aborts the update. Sometimes the old version has to be deleted first.

According to advisers in forums, the device needs more free storage for an update than the current version occupies. Anyone trying to install an older version over a newer one gets the notice that the package has “an older version code”; Android does not allow this step back.

Where the new file comes from is the same question as with the first download. Forums mention that third-party stores such as Aptoide can recognise an app installed via APK and show an update. No source describes an update mechanism inside the app itself.

VIII

Installation by operator

22Bet is the only one of the four brands with a documented APK route (according to goal.com): download the file, permission for unknown sources, tap the file. For iPhones, goal.com names iOS 12.0 or newer and the App Store route: search for “22bet” and choose “Get”. A search via the iTunes interface for Germany on 08.10.2026, however, found no 22Bet app. According to goal.com, push notifications exist only in the app, not on the mobile website. All data on the 22Bet app with Android, iOS and file size are collected on the brand page.

For Irwin, AskGamblers names apps for iOS and Android, LCB states “App Available: Yes”. On the App Store the sources contradict each other: present according to AskGamblers, not found according to an iTunes search for Germany on 08.10.2026. All known values on the Irwin Casino app for Android and iOS are on the brand page.

Frumzi needs no installation, play takes place in the mobile browser (HTML5). LCB states “App Available: No”. On frumzi.com there is a web app manifest with “display: standalone”, which opens the site from the home screen like a separate app without an address bar. How the Frumzi app works as a web app instead of a download is shown in detail on the brand page.

5Gringos also needs no installation, a compatible mobile browser is enough; according to AskGamblers “No app is required”. The website also carries a manifest with “display: standalone”. APK source and system requirements: no information, because no package is installed. What the 5Gringos Casino app offers in the browser and as a web app is on the brand page.

No source gives a price for the APK of 22Bet or Irwin; for approved gambling apps in the Play Store, Google requires that they are free to download. Whether play after installation is for play money or real money is explained on the page about the real-money casino app and the difference from play money.

Short answers

FAQ

How do I install a casino APK on Android?

Download the APK from the casino's website, allow the installation of unknown apps for the browser or file manager, open the file and tap “Install”. Beforehand it is worth checking free storage and the Android version.

Where do I find the setting for unknown sources?

From Android 8.0 in the system screen “Install unknown apps”, separately for each app that opens APK files. Up to Android 7.1.1 under Settings › Security as the global setting “Unknown sources”. Manufacturer-specific paths for Samsung or Xiaomi: no information.

Why does “App not installed” appear?

Advisers name not enough storage, an existing app with a different signature, a damaged file, an incompatible device or a block by Android because of possible malware. Whether a missing permission for unknown apps also triggers this message, advisers see differently.

Does the old version have to be deleted before an update?

Not always. An update over the existing app works if package name and signature are the same. In a package conflict with a different signature, the old version must be uninstalled first.

Can I install a casino APK on an iPhone?

No. APK is an Android format. On the iPhone the options are the App Store or a web app in the browser. According to goal.com 22Bet is in the App Store, according to AskGamblers Irwin is too; an iTunes search for Germany on 08.10.2026 found no app for either.

Is downloading a casino app free?

No source gives a price for the APK of 22Bet or Irwin. Frumzi and 5Gringos need no download at all, they run in the mobile browser.
